Year 1

Clay Fish

During Term 1, the Year 1 girls unit focused on emotions and how artists convey their feelings in artworks. They explored how colour and line can have emotive qualities and portraits with different facial expressions. The girls then designed an emotion fish inspired by the book “Happy” by Mies Van Hout. They created their fish from clay where they learnt how to create a double pinch pot construction, how to join clay together, the use of different tools and the glazing process.

Textile Monkey

During Term 2, the Year 1 girls unit focused on textiles. They learnt how to do a running stitch on hessian using wool in preparation for their artwork. The girls then designed monkeys giving each of them a unique personality in their illustrations in their visual diaries. They then used their newly learnt running stitch around the body and head of their shape and used felt pieces to develop their animals character that they outlined in their drawing.

Digital Cat

During Term 3, the Year 1 girls learnt about artist Laurel Burch and her magnificant cats. They then learnt how to draw a cat in her style focusing on line, shape and pattern to give their cat an interesting design. Upon our return to the art room in Term 4 the girls added bold black outlines and watercolour to their cats before photographing them in an iPad app that turned their traditional artwork into a digital piece.
